What are Plastic Bateas Beams?

A Bateas is a floating structure for mussel farming, which have been traditionally made from wood beams where long ropes hang from them where the mussels are attached. Replacing the wood with plastics is the next step in the development of these farms.

Eliminate rotting – unlike wood, plastics such as Polystone 300, will not rot and degrade.
UV & Weather Resistant – Polystone 300 has high UV resistance for long-term durability in strong sunlight.
Non-corroding – metal fasteners will corrode in salt water, but these can be eliminated by using plastic welding to connect and build the structure.
Low maintenance – The plastic needs no to little maintenance to keep it in good working order.

MATERIAL SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS

Material selection is a critical consideration when choosing a plastic for Mussel Bateas Beams, as it directly impacts the performance, durability, and maintenance requirements of these components. Here are some key material selection considerations for plastic bushes and bearings:

Weight / Density

Since these are floating structures, the density and therefore overall weight will affect the buoyancy of the structure. Polystone 300 having a specific gravity of 0.95 allows it to float in water.

UV & Weather Resistance

This structure is subject to UV light and weathering, therefore materials that are UV resistance and suitable to be exposed to the elements.

Corrode and Rot

Wet and salty environments will corrode metals and rot wood. An appropriately selected plastic will eliminate this degradation.

Weldability

A material that is weldable will allow to eliminate or minimise metal fasteners that may corrode in wet and salty conditions.

Recyclable

At the end of the service life, a recyclable material will provide the benefit of sustainability, and be more environmentally friendly.
