Sustainable Recycled UHMWPE: What are the options?

The ability of thermoplastics (also known as thermosoftening polymers) to be recycled and therefore reused helps to:

  • minimise the need for fossil resources.
  • reduce the environmental carbon footprint.
  • promote a circular economy.
  • create competitive advantage.

The options of sustainable recycled UHMWPE explained

Polystone FM Black (Fender)

Commonly referred to as Fender, Polystone FM Black is a cost-effective grade of UHMWPE, similar to Polystone MR Confetti. However, it offers an enhanced formulation that ensures a more uniform and consistent appearance.

Typical Applications: Polystone FM Black (Fender) has primarily been formulated with higher stiffness for wharf fendering panels, where it provides longer service life compared to wood, as well as being a more sustainable solution.

NOTE: Both Polystone MR Confetti & Polystone FM Black result in slightly lower surface finishes from machining compared to more refined recycled grades and virgin UHMWPE

Polystone MR

Polystone MR makes use of a higher level of refined feed stock to make sheets. This results in a higher quality grade compared to Confetti and Fender, with improved appearance, machined surface finish and abrasion resistance, as well as allowing it to be made in not just black, but also green and Anti-Static (AST) grades.

Even though this recycled grade does not reach the heights of virgin UHMWPE (Polystone M), it provides a significant improvement over traditional recycled grades of UHMWPE.

Typical Applications: Polystone MR is ideally suited to wear strips and chain guides, where the application demands are not as extreme that would require the highest abrasion resistance of the 9.2m g/mol Polystone M 7000

Polystone M ReLoop

The Polystone M ReLoop range is truly a significant leap for sustainable thermoplastic materials. Made from the highest percentage and level of recycle feed stock, together with a specific formulation that allows for the carbon footprint to be measured to international standards, Polystone M ReLoop reduces its carbon footprint by more than 60% compared to virgin UHMWPE.

For the first time, recycled UHMWPE is available in Natural (White), and with a measurable carbon footprint that our clients can use in their sustainability endeavours and supporting ESG policies.

Typical Applications: Polystone M ReLoop is well suited for industries and applications that required a measurable and sustainable carbon footprint for wear and abrasion resistant applications, with the low co-efficient of friction that comes with UHMWPE.
